Argentina Coast Sees Over 300 Baby Whale Deaths This Year

Times of India · environment

Scientists are urgently investigating the deaths of over 300 baby southern right whales off Argentina's Patagonian coast this year, a figure nearly triple the previous record. The sheltered waters are a crucial nursery for the species, but an alarming number of calves have washed ashore since June. Preliminary findings suggest a bacterial infection, specifically Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, is responsible. However, researchers are puzzled as this bacterium has been previously identified in the region without causing such high mortality, prompting an intensive investigation into the unusual circumstances.
