IIT Madras Study: Air Pollution Data Improves Urban Flood Forecasts

Times of India · science

A study led by IIT Madras suggests that incorporating atmospheric air pollution data can significantly enhance the accuracy of urban flood forecasts. Researchers used Chennai's 2015 extreme rainfall event to model the impact of aerosols and cloud processes on rainfall and flooding. The findings indicate that explicitly representing aerosols improved rainfall simulation by approximately 22% and flood inundation accuracy by about 50%. This framework could aid in reservoir management and release decisions during heavy rainfall events, though it is not yet an operational system.
