Gaya's Sacred Sites: From 365 Vedis to 54, Pilgrims Seek Salvation
Times of India · spirituality
Gaya, a significant pilgrimage site, once boasted 365 religious spots (vedis) for performing pind daan rituals, but this number has now dwindled to 54. All these vedis are considered crucial for attaining peace and liberation from the cycle of rebirth. Key sites include Vishnupad temple, associated with Lord Vishnu's footprint; the Falgu river, blessed to grant moksha; Vaitarni pond, representing the mythical river of departed souls; Gokhur Vedi for aiding souls' passage; Akshaywat, an evergreen banyan tree linked to Sita's offerings; and Brahmayoni hill, significant since the Ramayana era.
