Swordtail Fish Mating Preferences Tracked Over Nine Generations
Times of India - India · india
Scientists at the University of Exeter used a digital dating game to study mate selection in swordtail fish over nine generations. Individual fish were placed in tanks with screens showing virtual partners, and their choices determined the characteristics of new virtual fish for the next generation. Male swordtails consistently preferred larger females, leading to a 24% increase in average size over the experiment. Female preferences were more varied, including longer tails and brighter colours. This innovative approach allowed researchers to track evolving mate preferences in a controlled environment.
