Nile Perch Introduction into Lake Victoria Led to Loss of 200 Native Fish Species

Times of India · environment

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Nile perch were introduced into Lake Victoria to boost fisheries and create commercial opportunities. However, this predatory fish spread throughout the ecosystem and is now linked to the dramatic decline of native species. The National Invasive Species Information Center reports that Nile perch ultimately destroyed about 200 native fish species through predation and competition. This introduction serves as a significant example of how well-intentioned ecological interventions can have unforeseen and devastating consequences on biodiversity.
