Oklahoma Meteor Crater Nearly 100 Million Years Younger Than Thought
Times of India · science
New zircon dating reveals the Ames meteor crater in Oklahoma is approximately 370 million years old, significantly younger than the previously estimated 467 million years. Researchers challenged earlier biochronological dating, which relied on conodont teeth found in the rock. This revised age suggests the impact did not occur during the Ordovician Meteor Event. Instead, it happened closer to the Frasnian-Famennian mass extinction, a period of significant marine life loss. The findings, published in Meteoritics & Planetary Science, offer a more accurate timeline for ancient impact events.
