Five individuals serving life sentences for their involvement in the 1998 Coimbatore serial bombings have been granted 60 days of parole. The bombings, which killed 58 people and injured over 200, occurred shortly before a rally by senior BJP leader L.K. Advani. The ruling TVK government stated the parole was granted on personal and health grounds as per regular procedure for long-term inmates. However, the BJP has strongly criticized the decision, accusing the government of adopting a lenient stance towards perpetrators of a serious terrorist attack.
