Times of India · environment
An elephant expert has criticised the Kerala forest department's decision to send an ailing 18-month-old orphan elephant calf, Maya, to Gujarat for advanced treatment. The calf, suffering from a genetic disorder and bone thinning, was airlifted to Jamnagar for a four to six-month treatment plan involving hormone and hydrotherapy. The expert argued that Kerala possesses excellent veterinarians and facilities to treat elephants, questioning the necessity of sending the calf outside the state. He expressed concern about the calf's survival chances and the precedent this action might set.
