Palestinian archaeologists and volunteers are working urgently to preserve Gaza's cultural heritage, which is under threat from ongoing Israeli military operations. Since October 2023, at least 164 cultural sites have been damaged, including historical landmarks like the Great Omari Mosque and the al-Qarara Cultural Museum. The Mayasem Association's "Guardians of Heritage" team has rescued over 1,700 historical pieces, but faces significant challenges. These include displacement, lack of specialized equipment, and dangerous access to areas near the "Yellow Line" under Israeli military control.
