Satellites Emit Radio Signals Interfering With Astronomical Observations
The Hindu - Science · science
A new study published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society reports that communications satellites in low-earth orbit are emitting radio signals that interfere with astronomical observations across various frequencies. Researchers tracked satellites from Starlink, OneWeb, and China's Guowang constellations, classifying emissions as intended, unwanted, and unintended. Some signals were found to be billions of times brighter than astronomical sources, potentially overwhelming telescopes. The study suggests operators should regulate licensed transmissions and stray radiation from onboard electronics to protect astronomical interests, especially as direct-to-cell services expand.
Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society
