Researchers have discovered that surface chemistry can sort nanoparticles within growing calcite crystals. Sulfate-rich spheres and carboxylate-rich vesicles spontaneously occupied different regions of the calcite. This breakthrough reveals a novel route to creating spatially programmed composite materials. It also opens possibilities for sequential payload release, offering new avenues in material science and drug delivery applications.
