Fukushima Dogs Showed Extreme Stress After 2011 Disaster
Hindustan Times · science
A 2012 study in Scientific Reports examined 17 dogs rescued from Fukushima after the 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown. These dogs exhibited five to 10 times higher urine cortisol levels, a stress hormone, compared to abandoned dogs from a non-disaster area. Researchers noted that even after 10 weeks of care, their stress hormone levels remained elevated. The study suggests the disaster experience, not just relocation, caused prolonged psychological trauma, impacting their behavior and attachment to caretakers.
