Indians Know Rights But Struggle With Constitutional Duties

TV9 Hindi · education

While most Indians can easily name their fundamental rights, they struggle to identify their fundamental duties. The Constitution lists 11 fundamental duties under Article 51A, which were added in 1976 through the 42nd Amendment, not part of the original 1950 document. Unlike rights, these duties are not directly enforceable in courts and are considered moral and civic commitments. However, Indian courts have used them as guiding principles to interpret laws, especially concerning environmental and public property protection.
