India Aims for 604 Million Tons Steel Capacity by 2047, Targets Lower Emissions
Times of India · business
India has set an ambitious target to nearly triple its steelmaking capacity to 604 million metric tons by 2047, up from the current 220 million tons. A draft steel policy, released for public consultation, outlines measures to reduce carbon emissions from steel production and secure long-term supplies of essential raw materials like iron ore and coking coal. The policy aims to cut the sector's average carbon-emission intensity by nearly 39%, supporting India's net-zero commitment by 2070. Achieving this expansion requires significant investment, reliable raw material access, and cleaner production technologies.
