Shallow-Water Coral Reefs Face Extinction Risk, New Study Warns
Al Jazeera · world
A new global assessment by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) warns that 96 percent of the world's shallow-water coral reefs face an extremely high risk of collapse within the next 50 years, with total extinction possible by 2075. Corals are highly sensitive to warming oceans caused by climate change, which leads to damaging bleaching events. This assessment, which examined 127 coral systems, highlights the severe threat to these vital ecosystems that support a quarter of marine species and coastal communities.
International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)
