Jantar Mantar: From Celestial Observatory to Site of Dissent

Hindustan Times · interesting

New Delhi's Jantar Mantar, built in 1724 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, was originally conceived as a scientific instrument to measure celestial movements with unprecedented precision. It housed massive masonry instruments like the Samrat Yantra sundial and Jai Prakash Yantra. While European astronomy advanced with telescopes, Jai Singh's observatory improved naked-eye observation traditions. However, urban growth and preservation challenges have diminished its astronomical utility. Consequently, Jantar Mantar has transformed into a prominent site for public demonstrations and political dissent, acquiring new meanings beyond its initial scientific purpose.
