A study by IIT Madras researchers indicates that highly educated professionals, including IT experts, bankers, and doctors, are frequently victims of financial cybercrime in India. This contradicts the notion that victims are merely careless or financially unaware. Fraudsters exploit victims during stressful life periods, using fear and urgency to induce a 'mind arrest' state. Losses can exceed ₹1 crore, leading to severe psychological distress and damaged trust. The study emphasizes that digital literacy alone is insufficient protection against sophisticated scams.

आई.आई.टी. मद्रास के शोधकर्ताओं की एक स्टडी बताती है कि भारत में हाईली एजुकेटेड प्रोफेशनल्स, जिनमें आईटी एक्सपर्ट, बैंकर और डॉक्टर शामिल हैं, अक्सर फाइनेंशियल साइबर क्राइम का शिकार हो रहे हैं। यह इस सोच के विपरीत है कि शिकार सिर्फ लापरवाह या आर्थिक रूप से अनजान लोग होते हैं। धोखेबाज लोगों को जीवन के तनावपूर्ण दौर में फंसाते हैं, डर और अर्जेंसी का इस्तेमाल करके 'माइंड अरेस्ट' की स्थिति पैदा करते हैं। नुकसान ₹1 करोड़ से ज़्यादा हो सकता है, जिससे गंभीर मानसिक परेशानी और भरोसे को ठेस पहुँचती है। स्टडी इस बात पर ज़ोर देती है कि सिर्फ डिजिटल लिटरेसी ऐसे सोफिस्टिकेटेड स्कैम से बचाने के लिए काफी नहीं है।
