Canada and the European Union will hold a summit in Montreal from October 29-30 to strengthen strategic and economic cooperation. This meeting aims to deepen political, economic, and institutional ties, potentially exploring associate membership for Canada within the EU. The summit is partly driven by declining relations with the United States and recent US tariff impositions. Both sides seek to diversify trade and leverage complementary strengths in areas like technology, defence, and critical minerals. The event builds upon the existing Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).
