Rare Moa Bird Egg Returns to New Zealand After 60 Years in US

Hindustan Times · science

A rare egg from an extinct giant moa bird is returning to New Zealand after nearly 60 years in a US private collection. Discovered in New Zealand in 1966, the egg was purchased by biotechnology firm Colossal Biosciences at an auction and will be given to Māori researchers in December. Fewer than 40 substantially complete moa eggs are known globally, making this find significant. The egg's examination, guided by Māori cultural practices, could reveal information about the bird and its origins. Colossal is also exploring moa de-extinction.
