Scientists discovered polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, in the 1940s, recognizing their unique resistance to heat, cold, oil, and water. These nearly indestructible chemicals have been widely used in products like cookware, pizza boxes, and pesticides. However, PFAS do not biodegrade and some are toxic. US company 3M, a major manufacturer, knowingly polluted surrounding environments for decades despite awareness of the harmful effects of these persistent chemicals.
