Modi Appoints Judges Directly, Not Collegium: Ex-Madras HC Judge

Former Madras High Court judge K Chandru stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly appoints Supreme Court and High Court judges, rather than the collegium system. He noted that the government's attempt to introduce the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) was struck down by the Supreme Court. Chandru criticized the collegium process for its lack of transparency and constitutional recognition, calling it the country's best-kept secret. He also pointed out that judges appointing judges is unique to India among democracies.

पूर्व मद्रास हाई कोर्ट जज के. चंद्रू ने कहा कि प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी सुप्रीम कोर्ट और हाई कोर्ट के जजों की नियुक्ति सीधे करते हैं, न कि कोलेजियम सिस्टम से। उन्होंने कहा कि सरकार द्वारा नेशनल जुडिशियल अपॉइंटमेंट्स कमीशन (NJAC) लाने की कोशिश को सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने खारिज कर दिया था। चंद्रू ने कोलेजियम प्रक्रिया की पारदर्शिता की कमी और संवैधानिक मान्यता न होने की आलोचना की, इसे देश का सबसे बड़ा राज बताया। उन्होंने यह भी बताया कि जजों द्वारा जजों की नियुक्ति लोकतंत्रों में सिर्फ भारत में ही होती है।
