The Supreme Court has requested a response from the Commissioner of CGST regarding a plea by Birla Sun Life Insurance. The insurer is challenging a tribunal order that upheld service tax on certain charges levied on life insurance policyholders. The court issued a notice on the insurer's special leave petition against the April 10, 2026, order of the Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT). CESTAT had set aside service tax demands on surrender and discontinuation charges but upheld the levy on reinstatement charges and a penalty.
