New Hampshire Closes 20 Acres of Great Bay To Shellfish Harvesting For Five Years
Times of India · environment
New Hampshire has closed 20 acres of Great Bay to shellfish harvesting for five years, starting November 1, 2026, and ending October 31, 2031. This measure aims to protect two oyster restoration sites near Woodman Point and Nannie Island, allowing scientists to rebuild vital reef habitats without disturbance. Oyster reefs are crucial for marine ecosystems, providing shelter and improving water quality. Historically, Great Bay supported extensive oyster reefs, but over 90% have been lost due to pollution, harvesting, and disease, impacting the entire bay's health.
