Ohio has approved local sponsors to purchase agricultural easements on 58 family farms, covering 5,165 acres across 36 counties. This initiative aims to protect farmland from non-agricultural development while allowing farmers to retain ownership and continue farming. The state now has over 111,000 acres of permanently preserved farmland across 769 farms. The Local Agricultural Easement Purchase Program uses public funding to ensure land remains in agricultural production. Farmers voluntarily agree to restrictions on land use in exchange for compensation, helping to preserve agricultural land against development pressures.
