AI Cameras Strengthen Early Warning System at Valmiki Tiger Reserve
Times of India · environment
Artificial intelligence-powered cameras are enhancing early warnings at Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) to mitigate human-wildlife conflict. Installed on the eastern periphery, these smart cameras have detected 68 bears and 26 tigers in two months, alongside human and leopard activity. The system alerts control rooms to animal movements near settlements, allowing forest staff to respond proactively. This technology aims to reduce response times and prevent escalation of encounters, with plans to expand to other vulnerable areas. The initiative has already seen a reduction in sloth bear attacks on the eastern side.
