India Considers Delaying UPI Merchant Fees Rollout Past October 15 Deadline

Times of India · business

The Indian government is reportedly considering postponing the introduction of Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) fees on UPI transactions, originally set for October 15. This move aims to avoid disrupting the busy festive shopping season and provide payment companies more time to adapt their systems. The proposed delay could extend the zero-fee regime for merchants by several months. While UPI remains free for consumers, the MDR would apply to person-to-merchant transactions exceeding Rs 2,000. This potential deferral follows recent reports of a zero-fee regime ending for UPI.
