UK spy agency MI5 accuses Chinese institution of espionage via AI research funding

Britain's MI5 has accused a Chinese academic organisation, the China General Technology Research Institute (CGTRI), of spying on UK research. MI5 stated that CGTRI has strong ties to China's civilian intelligence service and funds academic research to improve its espionage capabilities. Over 100 UK academics have reportedly contributed to CGTRI-funded projects on AI, cybersecurity, and other sensitive topics. The agency warned that this activity poses a threat to UK national security, urging academics to cut ties with the institute. China has denied the allegations, calling them fabricated and false.
