Karnataka Flags Huge Hospital Drug Price Markups

Karnataka has flagged a significant gap between the landing cost and Maximum Retail Price (MRP) of medicines and medical devices supplied to hospitals. In some instances, the markup reaches as high as 52.6 times the acquisition cost. Critical-care drugs, oncology medicines, and implants are particularly affected by this practice. The state's drug administration commissioner has urged regulatory intervention, citing an "information-asymmetry and captive-patient problem" where patients bear the brunt of inflated prices. Proposed solutions include mandatory disclosure of institutional prices and patient-facing price ceilings linked to acquisition costs.
