RBI Sells Bonds, Tightens Reserve Needs To Squeeze Banking System Liquidity
Economic Times · business
India's central bank, the RBI, announced plans to sell bonds worth $2.6 billion and increase the daily cash reserve ratio maintenance for banks to 99% from October 16. These measures aim to drain liquidity from the banking system. This follows a recent policy rate hike and signals further tightening. The RBI expects the current liquidity surplus, which averaged over 7 trillion rupees, to be absorbed within the current financial year ending in March. Banks must park 3% of deposits with the RBI under CRR, earning no income on these funds.
