Aaj Tak · spirituality

The name Mahagauri is associated with Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva. This name is derived from her appearance after intense penance. According to the legend, she performed severe austerities to win Lord Shiva's heart. Her devotion and penance were so intense that her body turned dark. Lord Shiva, pleased with her dedication, washed her with the waters of the Ganga, restoring her fair complexion. This transformation led to her being known as Mahagauri, signifying her radiant and pure form.
