Jeypore Town Revives Ancient Tribal Lathi Worship Tradition on Dussehra

Times of India · interesting

Jeypore town in Koraput is keeping alive its centuries-old Dussehra tradition of worshipping sacred bamboo lathis, a practice that connects to its royal past and deep tribal roots. Though the Jeypore kingdom no longer exists and royal processions have ceased, the ritual of bringing sacred lathis from village altars to Jeypore continues. This year, over 60 tribal groups are expected to participate in the event, which historically involved villagers presenting grievances to the ruler. The tradition, revived in 2006, symbolises village deities and prosperity, preserving a significant cultural heritage.
