Nepal to Drain Four Glacial Lakes to Mitigate Deadly Flood Risks

The Hindu - International · world

Nepal is launching a significant project this fiscal year to drain four high-altitude glacial lakes, aiming to reduce the risk of catastrophic floods. This initiative follows a recent disaster that claimed over 1,400 lives and left thousands missing. The project involves creating canals to safely release water into nearby rivers. Design and studies for the lakes, located between 4,050m and 5,483m, will commence soon. This effort, funded by the Green Climate Fund and others, could take up to six years to complete and includes installing sensors and warning systems.
