China Opens Military Outpost At Former CIA Airfield In Laos

China has established a new military outpost at a former CIA-operated airfield in northwestern Laos, near the Thai border. The facility, which began operations on September 29, includes the China-Laos Joint Support and Training Center and the China-Laos Friendship Aviation Academy. Beijing states the facilities will aid Laos in training its air force pilots and are not directed against any third party. Satellite imagery reveals a completed runway capable of accommodating 22 aircraft, with eight planes already visible. Analysts suggest the move is more opportunistic than strategically vital for China.
