Times of India · science

Underwater explorations off Tamil Nadu's coast have revealed new clues about the ancient Chola kingdom's maritime links. The Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology conducted an 18-day exploration, discovering a fragment of a "torpedo jar" from West Asia, terracotta ring wells, and ceramic fragments. These findings support historical descriptions of Poompuhar, also known as Kaveripoompattinam, as a significant trading centre. The exploration aims to map the port's extent and understand its connection to ancient trade networks and sea-level changes.
