Britain's MI5 spy agency has issued an unprecedented alert warning that a Chinese organisation, the China General Technology Research Institute (CGTRI), is funding academic research in the UK on behalf of Beijing's state security service. Over 100 UK academics have reportedly contributed to projects involving AI, cybersecurity, and covert communications. MI5 stated the primary purpose of CGTRI is to enhance the Chinese Ministry of State Security's technical capabilities for espionage. Academics continuing to engage with CGTRI now risk prosecution under Britain's National Security Act.
