Jurist Navanethem ‘Navi’ Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, recognizing her extensive career in international law. Born in Durban to Indian indentured labourers, Pillay became the first woman to open a law practice in Natal province and defended anti-apartheid activists. She later served on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where she made landmark rulings on genocide and incitement, and held positions at the International Criminal Court and as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
