237 Million-Year-Old Marine Amphibian Fossil Discovered in China

TV9 Hindi · science

Scientists in China have unearthed two nearly complete skeletons of Gerrothorax Maritimus, an ancient amphibian that lived approximately 237 million years ago during the Triassic Period. This remarkable discovery, published in 'Nature Ecology & Evolution', reveals the first known amphibian species to have fully adapted to marine saltwater environments. Unlike modern amphibians with permeable skin, Gerrothorax Maritimus possessed a strong, bony armor, likely protecting it from the harsh conditions of the sea. This finding challenges previous understandings of amphibian evolution and adaptation.
