The Water Resources Department (WRD) has commenced the removal of invasive seemai karuvelam plants from irrigation tanks along the Palar River in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. This initiative, prompted by farmer requests, aims to enhance groundwater levels and increase agricultural land before the Northeast monsoon. Six out of twenty identified tanks, including Thorapadi and Agaramcheri, have already been cleared. This large-scale removal, costing approximately ₹6 lakh per tank, is being undertaken as a permanent measure to conserve rainwater, with excavated plants being repurposed for paper and brick-making.
