Smallcap Rally Falters, Leading to Drop In Margin-Funded Stock Bets
Economic Times Markets · stocks
Leveraged bets on Indian stocks are set to decline for the first time since March, as the rally in speculative segments falters. Borrowed positions decreased to 1.56 trillion rupees ($16.5 billion), down from a September record, indicating retail traders are reducing risk. This pullback occurs as India's equity market faces pressure from high oil prices, with small- and mid-caps leading the decline after reaching peaks in early September. Small-cap shares constitute 46% of the total leverage book, with over 700 stocks in the segment holding leveraged positions.
