Tensions rose in Nandigram on Wednesday after police detained Matua representative Sukriti Ranjan Biswas and social activist Manik Fakir. They were en route to campaign for Congress candidate Milan Pradhan. The Congress leaders were taken to the Nandigram police station without an immediate explanation, though Fakir was later moved to Kolkata. The Congress condemned the detentions, calling it an autocratic and vindictive attempt to sabotage their campaign due to political fear. Bengal Congress president Subhankar Sarkar questioned the administration's fear of the party's growing presence.
