CDU Wins Lower Saxony Local Elections

Germany's conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) emerged as the strongest party in Lower Saxony's local elections, securing 27.2% of the vote. The Social Democrats followed with 24.6%, while the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) came in third with 15.9%. These elections were closely watched as an indicator of the AfD's strength, especially in western German states. Turnout increased to 64.6% compared to the 2021 polls.
