India's Emissions Growth Slows As Renewables Replace Coal
Mongabay India · environment
India's greenhouse gas emissions growth significantly slowed in 2025, moving away from a longer period of rapid expansion, according to the UNEP's Emissions Gap Report 2026. While datasets differ on a slight increase or decrease, all indicate a departure from previous trends. Renewable electricity generation surged by 98 terawatt-hours, nearly doubling electricity demand growth, while coal-fired generation fell by 44 terawatt-hours. Milder weather and slower demand also contributed to this shift, though sustained reductions require further investment in energy storage and industrial decarbonisation.
