Democrats will control both chambers of the US Congress from January, granting them new powers to investigate and block Donald Trump's administration. They can pursue investigations into the Iran war and allegations of corruption, and block legislation and appointments. However, Democrats lack the 60 Senate votes needed to overcome a filibuster, and Trump can veto any bill. Most of the President's actions abroad, including tariffs and visa curbs, rely on authorities he can continue to use without congressional approval. The cost of the Iran war has already exceeded $47 billion.
