Sikh lawyer Prabhjot Singh Virk has taken his fight against the mandatory oath of allegiance to the King to Canada's Supreme Court. Virk, an Amritdhari Sikh, believes swearing loyalty to a secular ruler violates his religious vows to God. Initially losing his case in Alberta's Court of King's Bench, he won an appeal in December 2025, with the court deeming the oath an unconstitutional infringement on religious freedom. The Alberta government appealed this decision, leading to the current Supreme Court review.
