Madhya Pradesh's Kadaknath Chicken: A GI-Tagged Black Bird With Unique Qualities
Times of India · interesting
The Kadaknath chicken, also known as Kali Masi, is an indigenous Indian breed from Madhya Pradesh's Jhabua and Dhar districts, prized for its entirely black appearance, including meat and bones. This unique fowl, associated with tribal communities for generations, received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2018. Its meat is noted for higher protein and lower fat content compared to broiler chicken, though it is significantly more expensive due to slower growth and lower egg production. The breed's distinctive black pigmentation is caused by a genetic condition called fibromelanosis.
