India has rejected what it calls a "negative characterisation" at the United Nations, based on allegations of human rights abuses and incomplete statistics. Ministry of External Affairs Deputy Secretary Barkha Tamrakar stated at the UN General Assembly in New York that human rights should not be used for political pressure or to selectively target countries. This statement follows UN human rights experts flagging a heavy-handed police response to youth-led demonstrations amid protests against the Chief Election Commissioner. India opposes using such allegations to unfairly portray the world's largest democracy.
