Florida Plans 4,800 Acres of Wetlands To Filter Kissimmee River Water

Times of India · environment

Florida is planning a significant 4,800-acre wetland project at the mouth of the Kissimmee River to combat phosphorus pollution. This initiative, known as the Lower Kissimmee Basin Stormwater Treatment and Recreation Area, aims to naturally filter water before it enters Lake Okeechobee. The project will direct polluted stormwater through treatment areas with aquatic vegetation, allowing plants and soils to absorb excess nutrients. Excessive phosphorus can lead to harmful algal blooms, depleting oxygen and harming aquatic life in Lake Okeechobee.
