Bengaluru's Whitefield, now a major IT hub, began over 140 years ago as a settlement for Eurasian and Anglo-Indian communities. Established in 1882 on land granted by the Mysore State, it was named after D. S. White, founder of an association in Madras. The community was planned with a village green and church, initially focusing on agriculture and horticulture. Its transformation into a technology district accelerated in the 1990s with the opening of the International Tech Park in 1996.
