Uganda gained independence in 1962, but traditional kingdoms like Buganda continue to exist within the modern republic. The Buganda Kingdom, headed by a Kabaka (king), has its own parliament and prime minister, though constitutional limits prevent them from exercising state powers. Buganda claims a territory of 61,000 square kilometers inhabited by approximately 12 million people. Its history is traced back to the late 14th century, with oral traditions suggesting origins in the 13th century.
