Extinct UK Butterfly Makes Remarkable Comeback

A butterfly once declared extinct in Britain, the large blue, has achieved a remarkable conservation success. Disappearing in 1979, it has now been successfully reintroduced and is found at 33 sites in south-west England. Recorded abundance has surged by 1,866% since 1983, according to the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme. This recovery is significant as many other native butterfly species are declining.
